++++++ U.S. COAST GUARD PRESS RELEASE ++++++
U.S. Coast Guard: Career Consultations For Micronesians Dec 1-14
USCG Career Specialist Seeks Interested Young Adults from FSM, ROM and Palau
USCG Visit To Offer Opportunity, R/T Travel To Guam For Applicants
Majuro (Dec 1st-4th) / Kosrae (Dec 4th-6th) / Pohnpei (Dec 6th-8th) / Chuuk (Dec 8th-11th) / Palau (Dec 11th-14th) / Yap (Dec 14th)
3 December 2007
A significant first in Micronesia ---regional visits 1-14December by a U.S. Coast Guard Career Specialist---has been announced by FSM officials. Initiated at the urging of FSM officials, the U.S. Coast Guard has agreed to dispatch to Majuro (1-4 Dec), Kosrae (4-6 Dec), Pohnpei (6-8 Dec), Chuuk (8-11 Dec), Koror (11-14 Dec), and Yap (14 Dec) the USCG’s regional career expert, Chief Petty Officer Kevin P. Hiro.
Those interested and qualified (e.g. 17 years old + Marshalls/FSM/Palau/U.S. citizens or green card holders) will be given the opportunity to hear firsthand, from Chief Hiro, the extraordinarily diverse career paths open to those who join the Coast Guard, which falls unde the U.S. Homeland Security umbrella. Chief Hiro will be also be available for one-on-one discussion/consultqtion, and encourages those possibly interested to look, beforehand, at the Coast Guard’s career website: www.gocoastguard.com
Those who take a preliminary 50-minute examination to be offered by Chief Hiro, scoring 40 or better, and meet qualifications (age 17-29 etc.), will be provided free roundtrip travel to Guam (airfare + accommodation), to then take the official Coast Guard examination and undergo further screening.
Previously, the Coast Guard overlooked Micronesia as to recruiting potential, focusing,instead, on regions with high population densities; but, we in Chuuk were recently able to persuade Coast Guard officials to give Micronesians this first opportunity, with others hopefully to follow in the coming years. Many in the region are familiar with the Coast Guard’s long history of presence, help, and good will throughout Micronesia ,including the former Coast Guard stations in Palau and Yap , and maritime assistance and patrols as recently as last month.
Benefits provided to those who join the Coast Guard include: free career training/education, housing, medical/dental care, commissary (base) privileges, 100% tuition assistance, 30 days paid vacation per year, transportation, access to military flights, world class training/experience and immediate retirement eligibility for USCG career (20 year) veterans.
Opportunities involve everything from law enforcement, ship handling/inspection/repair, and search/resue, to piloting aircraft/helicopters, environmental protection/law, and navigation, to communications, computer skills/technology, transportation industry skills, management, and from legal training to customs/quarantine/hazardous material detection activities and canine handling.
One unique aspect is the Coast Guard’s willingness to let members decide, for themselves, which career specialty they choose to pursue. This perhaps is why the Coast Guard,alone, has the highest retention rate of all U.S. services---plus the fact that most personnel are stationed close to home.
According to Chief Hiro, some other important details to know about the Coast Guard include: (1) the Coast Guard is the lead agency as to Homeland Security enforcement while unlike other U.S. armed forces (army/navy/marines/air force) are not under the Defense Department; (2) the Coast Guard is multi-missioned, with homeland security enforcement, search & rescue, and protection of natural resources/waterways high priorities; (3) while not part of the Defense Department, Coast Guard personnel enjoy the all of the privileges/benefits of those sister services; (4) while most Coast Guard personnel are primarily home ported in the U.S. Mainland, Hawaii , Puerto Rico, and Guam , the organization has units worldwide, including Europe and Asia ; and, (5) the Coast Guard is the most accommodating of the services, with strong emphasis on family members’ needs, family values, and families as a whole.
Minimal qualifications include: 17-27 years old (with waiver up to 29); high school graduate; FSM/Marshalls/Palau/U.S. citizenship (or green card/U.S. permanent residence); and good health---married persons and those married with children are also eligible.
Young adults in Micronesia interested in the Coast Guard are encouraged to consider and take advantage of this unique opportunity---the first-ever such opportunity made available to Micronesia ’s young adults seeking education, training, productive career paths, and positive benefits as to self, family, health, and professional/travel opportunities.
